"DJ themed 13th Birthday Party and for Clair's son and two of his good friends"
Finding inspiration on
the web a a teenage boys birthday party was almost impossible. The brief from the
boys was: must be fun, funky and have cool music and venue. We hired a groovy local
cafe and three 15 year old dj's to get the party started. With a little artistic
direction, my son and his friends spent a sunny spring afternoon painting the
backdrop for the dessert table, with the obligatory paint fight thrown in. I wanted
to include a small dessert table, and make it bright and fun, whilst being careful
not to be girly or kiddy. Thirteen is an important step away from childhood, so I
wanted to include things that were reminiscent of childhood whilst still being
teen-friendly and quick and easy for the the 60+ kids to get their sweet fix, with a
funky edge. Red, yellow and orange jelly cups and swirly lollipops, with a towering
topsy turvy cake were the perfect answer. The cake was an absolute labour of love
(and stress) for me… countless hours of design, baking and creating - an I loved
every minute. The cake included elements that the boys enjoy such as music and
longboarding, or they thought were cool, like a graffiti wall. (This complimented
the party invites). The table needed to look great in the early/lighter part of the
evening, and into the night, when the lights dimmed and the disco took
off"
